Miguel Oliveira is heading to a local hospital after doctors diagnosed him with a fracture in his right wrist during the opening practice session for the 2024 Indonesian MotoGP. His Trackhouse team announced that he will undergo a three-dimensional CT scan at the Mataram hospital to assess whether surgery is necessary.
The incident occurred during a challenging FP1 session characterized by dusty and slippery conditions. While navigating the Turn 3-4 double left, Oliveira experienced a significant highside that sent him tumbling off his bike. He came to rest sitting upright on the outside kerbing, visibly shaken but alert. Medical personnel swiftly placed him on a stretcher and transported him to the Medical Centre for further evaluation.
Unfortunately, this injury means that Oliveira will miss the remainder of the weekend’s events and raises concerns about his availability for the following weekend’s Japanese MotoGP. Although he was the only rider to crash in the premier class during the morning session, other competitors faced difficulties in the earlier Moto2 and Moto3 practices, including Moto3 title leader David Alonso.
In FP1, Oliveira’s teammate Raul Fernandez finished in 20th place, while Maverick Vinales emerged as the leading Aprilia rider, securing the second-fastest time.
The afternoon practice session, which will determine the top ten riders for direct Q2 access, is scheduled to begin at 3 PM local time. Fans and fellow competitors alike are hopeful for a swift recovery for Oliveira as the MotoGP season continues.
