Casey Stoner and Valentino Rossi, two of MotoGP’s most iconic riders, have put their long-standing rivalry to rest, as they were spotted riding together at Rossi’s famed VR46 Ranch last weekend.
The duo, who were fierce competitors throughout the late 2000s and early 2010s, shared one of the sport’s most intense rivalries. Their conflict reached its peak at the 2011 Spanish Grand Prix, when Rossi collided with Stoner, prompting the Australian’s infamous remark, “Your ambition outweighs your talent.” Stoner later cited this incident, and Rossi’s subsequent apology attempt, as a turning point in their relationship, expressing a loss of respect for the Italian legend.
In January, Stoner reflected on the difficult period when Rossi joined Ducati, acknowledging the pressure Rossi faced but also criticizing his remarks about Stoner’s team and their performance. The former world champion voiced his displeasure, saying, “They spoke very negatively about me and my team,” referring to the comments from Rossi and his longtime engineer, Jeremy Burgess. Despite their team’s limited budget, Stoner believed they were still competitive, which made the criticism sting.
However, time appears to have healed old wounds. Last weekend, Rossi invited Stoner to join him at his ranch in Tavullia, Italy, where they rode together on the ranch’s renowned dirt track. The event marked a significant thaw in their relationship, with Stoner sharing a heartfelt social media post following their reunion. “A lot has changed between Vale and myself over the last 12 years—family, friends,” Stoner wrote. “But the passion for bikes will always be the same. Thanks for the opportunity to share a track with you once again!”
Rossi, who is currently preparing for his annual 100km of Champions event, which will take place on January 10-11, was eager to reunite with Stoner at the VR46 Ranch. The event will feature members of Rossi’s VR46 Academy, as well as other prominent stars from the motorcycle racing world.
The unexpected reunion between two of MotoGP’s most famous riders demonstrates not only the passage of time but also the enduring bond they share through their love for racing and motorcycles.
