Yamaha’s MotoGP program celebrates a significant triumph in the rider market as Fabio Quartararo commits to a new two-year deal with the team, extending his tenure as lead rider.
The 2021 world champion’s journey with Yamaha saw ups and downs, particularly during the last season when the team faced challenges with performance levels dropping to unprecedented lows in MotoGP history.
Despite Fabio Quartararo’s championship win in 2021 and a close miss in 2022, Yamaha struggled to compete for individual wins or championship titles in the subsequent season. Issues such as top speed and single-lap performance plagued the M1, making Quartararo’s decision to stay with Yamaha surprising to some.
However, Quartararo’s confidence in Yamaha’s revamped approach and aggressive mindset, demonstrated during the offseason, influenced his decision to extend his contract through 2025 and 2026.
Yamaha’s efforts to address performance issues, including changes in management and technical partnerships, have resonated positively with Quartararo, reaffirming his commitment to the team.
While Quartararo explored opportunities outside Yamaha, Honda was the only logical contender to offer comparable terms. Yet, Quartararo’s belief in Yamaha’s potential outweighed any potential gains from a move.
Yamaha’s managing director, Lin Jarvis, emphasized Quartararo’s integral role in the MotoGP project, highlighting the team’s concerted efforts to accelerate their return to victory.
With Quartararo’s contract extension secured, Yamaha looks ahead to filling the vacant ride alongside him for the 2025-2026 seasons, with Alex Rins representing a strong candidate following his impressive performance since joining the team.
