Marquez: Quartararo’s Yamaha MotoGP Renewal Tied to Age and Yamaha’s Potential

The pivotal change comes with the addition of Massimo Bartolini, Ducati’s technical leader, as Yamaha’s new technical director, signifying a significant move within the team’s technical department.

Amidst Quartararo’s renewal, comparisons surfaced with Marquez’s decision last season to depart Honda after 11 years, opting for the satellite Gresini team and competing on a non-latest Ducati model.

Marquez, now 31, understands Quartararo’s perspective, citing the 24-year-old’s ample time ahead compared to his own situation.

“It’s not surprising Quartararo stayed with Yamaha,” Marquez shared in an Autosport interview at Austin. “Yamaha remains Yamaha, and Honda is Honda. They’ll make their mark eventually.”

Quartararo's

Acknowledging Quartararo’s different circumstances, Marquez empathized, noting the absence of traumatic experiences like his own serious arm injury in 2020, which led to extensive surgeries and self-doubt.

“He hasn’t faced the challenges I did with a severe injury that made me question myself. That’s crucial,” Marquez emphasized.

Despite Marquez’s podium finish in the sprint race and subsequent crash in the main event, Quartararo struggled with 15th and 12th-place finishes over the weekend, indicating Yamaha’s prolonged recovery journey.

Reflecting on Quartararo’s decision, Marquez highlighted the patience and confidence necessary in a project with promised advancements, acknowledging the competitive nature of MotoGP and the uncertainty of effort translating into success.

“In such a competitive environment, confidence and luck play pivotal roles, as engineers work tirelessly to unlock the key to a competitive bike,” Marquez concluded.
