Francesco Bagnaia executed his strategic plan flawlessly in the Spanish MotoGP, ultimately triumphing over Marc Marquez to clinch his second grand prix victory of 2024.
Bagnaia’s impressive maneuver, a double overtake on Marco Bezzecchi and Jorge Martin on the outside of turn six during lap one, positioned him ahead of the pack, seizing the lead from Marquez before the completion of the opening lap.
While Marquez briefly regained the lead after a mistake at turn 13 on lap two, Bagnaia’s resolve remained unwavering. Employing tactics reminiscent of his performance at Aragon in 2021, he countered Marquez’s advances each time the Gresini rider attempted to reclaim the lead.
Reflecting on his strategy, Bagnaia explained, “When I noticed that Marc was closing in behind me. I pushed for two laps and managed a time of 37.8s, but I could see him gaining ground. So, I decided not to overly stress the tires at that moment, as he was catching up. I aimed to preserve some tire performance for the final three laps.”
Maintaining his composure, Bagnaia surged ahead once Marquez made his second attempt at corner nine. “From that point on,” Bagnaia continued, “I pushed again, and the 37.4s lap time arrived. This helped me to establish a slight gap in the final lap.”
Despite an incident at turn ten in Jerez where both riders collided, adding to the previous day’s collision with Brad Binder and Bezzecchi, Bagnaia remains unperturbed. He maintains that MotoGP racing, while aggressive at times, remains within acceptable bounds.
Acknowledging the intensity of the battles on the track, Bagnaia remarked, “We may have contact because executing a conventional overtake has become more challenging due to everyone’s strong braking capabilities. It’s common for the rider on the inside to drift wide, requiring the outside rider to defend their position. This dynamic is prevalent in the current racing environment.”
However, Bagnaia emphasized the importance of mutual respect among riders. Asserting that it is fundamental for delivering compelling and enjoyable races. “Respect is paramount,” he concluded. “A respectful environment fosters exciting battles and enhances the overall enjoyment of the sport. Without respect, it’s impossible to engage in thrilling battles and derive satisfaction from them.”
