Jon Jones Pressures Dana White for Alex Pereira Fight, Threatens UFC Retirement

New York, USAJon Jones delivered a dominant performance at UFC 309, securing a third-round TKO victory over Stipe Miocic to successfully retain his heavyweight title. After the fight, Jones danced in celebration, paying tribute to President-elect Donald Trump, who sat in the front row at Madison Square Garden.

In his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan, Jones thanked Trump for attending and then dropped a bombshell about his future in the UFC.

“I want to thank President Donald Trump for being here tonight,” Jones said. “As far as my future in the octagon, I decided that maybe I won’t retire. I know we have options,” Jones added, leaving the door open for more fights while also hinting that retirement could still be on the table.

Jones’ Next Opponent: Tom Aspinall or Alex Pereira?

Jones’ immediate future in the UFC is a point of contention. Dana White, UFC president, has previously promised Tom Aspinall a title shot after his victory over Sergei Pavlovich in a dramatic knockout at UFC’s November 2023 event. However, Jones has his sights set on another opponent: Alex Pereira.

“I want to fight Pereira,” Jones confirmed during the post-fight press conference. “And if that doesn’t happen, I’ll gladly retire,” he added, indicating that a clash with Pereira is his top priority. Jones emphasized that if the fight doesn’t come to fruition, he would have no regrets about walking away from the sport.

“If that was my last fight, I have no problem with that,” Jones said. “It’s been an honor to fight in front of President Trump. Negotiating is about being willing to walk away if it doesn’t make sense.”

Dana White’s Response

Jon Jones

Despite Jones’ strong desire to face Pereira, White remains hesitant about the matchup, citing the significant difference in weight classes between the two fighters. Pereira, currently on a hot streak, is a former middleweight champion who recently moved up to light heavyweight, while Jones is the reigning heavyweight champion.

White explained: “Jon is just too big for Alex. Look at how he dominated Stipe. It doesn’t make sense. I like Alex Pereira, I really do, but there’s no reason for a fight between these two. Unless they both really push for it, I don’t see why we should make it happen.”

He added, “Pereira’s on a great run, but why would we match him up with a fighter who’s so much bigger and stronger?”

What’s Next for Jon Jones?

Jones remains confident in his standing as the top fighter in the UFC, and with no clear opponent lined up, he has left the door open for future negotiations. Whether White will agree to a Pereira fight remains to be seen, but Jones’ readiness to retire if his demands are not met adds a new layer of pressure on the UFC president.

As of now, Jones remains the reigning heavyweight champion, but his future could hinge on securing the fight he wants most: a showdown with Alex Pereira.
