The Brazilian mixed martial arts community is in shock and mourning following the tragic death of Diego Braga, a revered 44-year-old MMA veteran. Braga, also known for coaching his son Gabriel Braga, a PFL featherweight finalist, fell victim to organized crime in Rio de Janeiro, as confirmed by local authorities on Monday.

The devastating incident unfolded after Braga reported the theft of his motorcycle from his garage late Sunday night on social media. Seeking to retrieve his stolen vehicle, witnesses report that Braga entered a favela, where members of the criminal organization Comando Vermelho tragically mistook him for a rival militia member, resulting in his untimely death.

Diego Braga, the leader of the Tropa Thai team in Rio de Janeiro, was not only an accomplished MMA fighter but also dedicated his time to coaching underprivileged children in the favelas, using martial arts as a positive outlet. His influence extended to coaching his son Gabriel, who reached the PFL featherweight finals in 2023, although he lost the championship match against Jesus Pinedo.

As an active MMA competitor from 2003 to 2014, Braga faced notable opponents like Charles Oliveira, Milton Vieira, and Adriano Martins, all of whom later competed in the UFC. Additionally, Braga served as the coach for legendary middleweight Anderson Silva in the latter stages of Silva’s UFC career.

Father and son shared a victorious moment in 2019 at Future MMA 7, where they both emerged triumphant. Diego Braga concluded his MMA career with a record of 23-8-1, winning 16 of his last 19 fights.
