Following her defeat to Kayla Harrison at UFC 300, Holly Holm finds herself contemplating her future in the sport.
In a one sided bout, Holm succumbed to a submission loss in the second round against the two time Olympic judo gold medalist. This setback marks Holm’s second submission loss in her last four fights, prompting speculation about her future in mixed martial arts.
Holm took to social media to address her performance, expressing disappointment in her inability to execute the game plan despite rigorous preparation. Acknowledging Harrison’s superiority in the fight, Holm credited her opponent while also admitting her own lack of focus.
Despite an early grappling exchange that seemed ill-advised, Holm found herself overwhelmed on the ground, unable to mount a successful defense against Harrison’s relentless assault. The defeat has left Holm contemplating her next steps, acknowledging the need for self reflection before making any decisions about her career at the age of 42.
While Holm expressed gratitude to her supporters and vowed to return stronger, UFC CEO Dana White weighed in on her future, suggesting retirement. White praised Harrison’s debut performance but hinted that Holm’s best days may be behind her, citing her legendary status in the sport.
Holm has yet to respond to White’s suggestion, understandably taking time to process her latest defeat. Regardless of her decision, Holm’s legacy as one of the top women’s bantamweights of all time remains intact, highlighted by her historic victory over Ronda Rousey in 2015.
