Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain secured a spot in the quarter-finals of the women’s 75kg boxing event at the Paris 2024 Olympics with a decisive victory in her opener. Borgohain, seeded eighth, defeated Norway’s Sunniva Hofstad by unanimous decision on Wednesday.
Hofstad began the bout aggressively, but Borgohain, a bronze medallist at Tokyo 2020 in the 69kg category, effectively countered her opponent’s attacks. The 26-year-old Indian boxer took control of the fight with strategic blows and maintained her dominance throughout the match.
Borgohain showcased her superior boxing skills in the opening rounds, with all five judges scoring the bout in her favor. Despite a spirited effort from Hofstad in the final round, Borgohain secured a 5:0 victory.
Looking ahead, Borgohain will face a significant challenge in the quarter-finals as she squares off against top seed Li Qian of the Republic of China on Sunday. The two boxers have met previously, with Li Qian winning their encounter at the Asian Games in Hangzhou last year. While Borgohain triumphed in their World Championships semi-final match in New Delhi.
