Indian boxing legend and Olympic medallist Mary Kom is considering a return to professional boxing, fueled by her disappointment over India’s performance at the recent Paris Olympics. Speaking at the Army Sports Conclave, she highlighted the pressing need for Indian boxers to intensify their efforts and for the boxing federation to address existing shortcomings in order to improve future results.
“I am planning to make a comeback… I will try to make a comeback in pro-boxing,” Mary Kom stated, expressing her determination to re-enter the competitive arena.
During the event, she also shared her enthusiasm for participating in sports promoting initiatives but voiced her frustration regarding India’s medal tally at the Olympics. “I feel very bad because we could not win any medal at the Paris Olympics,” she lamented. She urged her fellow athletes to work harder and called on the federation to prioritize addressing the gaps that contributed to this disappointing outcome.
In July, Gagan Narang, a four time Olympian and bronze medallist in the men’s 10m Air Rifle event at the 2012 Olympic Games, took over as the Chef-de-Mission for the Indian contingent at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, a role previously held by Mary Kom.
As she contemplates her return, Mary Kom’s commitment to the sport and her desire to elevate Indian boxing remain unwavering. Her potential come back could inspire a new generation of athletes as they prepare for upcoming competitions on the international stage.
