Max Verstappen is urging Red Bull Racing to continue their aggressive push for car upgrades as Formula 1‘s sliding scale aerodynamic testing regulations begin to impact the team’s performance. Since the introduction of the ground effect era in 2022, Red Bull has dominated the sport. With Verstappen and the team securing both the drivers’ and constructors’ titles.
Verstappen has underscored his dominance by breaking the record for the most victories in a single season. However, the current campaign is shaping up differently, despite Verstappen still leading the standings. This season has seen victories from Ferrari’s drivers, both Mercedes drivers, and McLaren’s Lando Norris. Sergio Perez’s struggles have opened the door for a competitive constructors’ title battle.
F1‘s sliding scale regulations, introduced alongside the budget cap, aim to level the playing field. These regulations provide the bottom team in the championship standings with 45% more testing time than the championship-winning team, with a 5% increment separating each of the 10 teams.
When asked about the impact of these regulations on Red Bull’s dominance, Verstappen acknowledged. “Naturally, it will always help to have more time, but that’s how the rules are, right? To try to slow down the winning team. When you are the ones chasing, you are happy when it is like that, and when you are the ones leading and being caught up during the season, you look at it like it is not what you want. But that’s how the rules are written, everyone agrees with it, and you just have to deal with it.”

Verstappen’s performance in the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix saw him beat the nearest non-Red Bull challenger, Carlos Sainz, by 25 seconds. However, with Mercedes, McLaren, and Ferrari now competing for wins, Verstappen has called for continued efforts to upgrade the car. At the British Grand Prix, Red Bull introduced an upgrade package. But damage in Q1 prevented Verstappen from fully showcasing the improvements during qualifying.
Reflecting on the new package, Verstappen stated, “We can see the gain. The weekend was a little bit hit and miss with trying a few bits on the car, and of course. The weather doesn’t help. But when you look at it, if we didn’t have damage with the floor, we would have definitely been in the fight for pole. So that is a positive. We need to keep pushing, we need to keep bringing bits – and I know they will come and hopefully. They will be a little bit better than the upgrades at the other teams.”
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has cautioned that the team would eventually face diminishing returns due to their strong start under the current technical regulations. However, Verstappen remains optimistic, warning against complacency. “I refuse to believe so because then you just get lazy. I am confident that everyone within the factory, they are always pushing flat out to try and bring bits of performance to the car, but there are a lot of smart people in other teams that are also doing the same thing.”
