Racing Bulls driver Yuki Tsunoda has admitted he holds himself responsible for missing out on a coveted Red Bull Racing seat to teammate Liam Lawson for the 2025 Formula 1 season.
Following the 2024 season finale at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Red Bull confirmed that Sergio Perez would depart the team despite holding a contract for 2025. The Milton Keynes-based outfit then announced that Liam Lawson would step up to partner four-time world champion Max Verstappen in the upcoming season.
Tsunoda, who made his F1 debut with Red Bull’s junior team four years ago, was overlooked for promotion despite his consistent performances throughout the 2024 season. In contrast, Lawson, a relative newcomer to the sport, secured the seat after an impressive rise through the Red Bull Junior Programme and a strong showing in his limited F1 opportunities.
Lawson’s Rapid Ascent
The New Zealand-born Lawson joined the Red Bull Junior Programme in 2019, excelling in junior categories before making his Formula 1 debut at the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix with Scuderia AlphaTauri, replacing the injured Daniel Ricciardo. Lawson quickly demonstrated his potential, scoring points in only his second race at the Singapore Grand Prix and participating in five races that season.
In 2024, Lawson returned to F1 with Visa Cash App Racing Bulls, scoring points in his comeback race at the United States Grand Prix. His performances, combined with his adaptability, convinced Red Bull to promote him to their senior team.
Tsunoda’s Reflection
Despite his frustration, Tsunoda acknowledged that his early struggles in F1 may have contributed to Red Bull’s decision. Reflecting on his rookie season, Tsunoda said:
“I think that part of it is kind of my fault because I wasn’t really able to perform straight away in the first year. It creates a bit of an image of who I am.”
Tsunoda, however, expressed pride in his 2024 performances, believing his improvement deserved more recognition:
“Even though I was performing well, I feel like I didn’t really get credit as much as probably other drivers get. But it is what it is. I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing, performing well, and prove them wrong.”

Despite the setback, Tsunoda remains focused on delivering strong performances for Racing Bulls in 2025. With his determination and consistent progress, the Japanese driver aims to solidify his position within the Red Bull program and keep his dream of joining the senior team alive.
