In an important step for Formula One’s ongoing development, Pirelli, the sport’s exclusive tyre supplier, conducted its latest in-season tyre testing this week at the Mugello Circuit in Italy. Teams from Red Bull, Ferrari, and McLaren participated in the two-day event, focusing on refining future tyre specifications.
The first day of testing faced challenges due to heavy rain and adverse weather conditions, but the second day provided more favorable weather, allowing for extensive data collection. McLaren’s Lando Norris took the wheel for his team, while Ferrari divided the driving duties between Charles Leclerc, who drove in the morning, and Carlos Sainz, who took over for the afternoon session. Red Bull’s Liam Lawson, who will be making a comeback at next weekend’s United States Grand Prix, stepped in for Daniel Ricciardo.
Pirelli structured the testing program into two distinct parts. The reigning champions, Red Bull, along with Ferrari, focused on testing tyres intended for the upcoming 2025 season. Meanwhile, McLaren explored prototype tyres designed for the 2026 season, which will usher in new technical regulations for both the power unit and chassis.
During the first hour of testing, drivers began on intermediate tyres but quickly transitioned to dry-weather tyres for the remainder of the day. The improved weather conditions allowed for a productive session, with the four drivers collectively completing a total of 390 laps.

Lando Norris led the pack with 118 laps and a best time of 1:21.302, closely followed by Liam Lawson with 116 laps and a time of 1:23.219. Charles Leclerc recorded 79 laps with a best time of 1:21.053, while Carlos Sainz completed 77 laps, clocking in at 1:21.890.
Looking ahead, Pirelli will continue its 2025 tyre testing during the Mexican Grand Prix, where drivers will have the opportunity to sample next year’s tyres during the second free practice session. Additionally, further testing for the 2026 tyres is scheduled with Alpine on November 13 and 14 at the Magny-Cours Circuit in France.
As teams prepare for the upcoming season, this testing phase represents a crucial opportunity for Pirelli and the teams to enhance performance and safety on the track.
