Mercedes has chosen to deviate from its long-standing tradition of launching its latest Formula 1 car at Silverstone. Instead, the new W16 will make its debut at the Bahrain International Circuit during a filming day on February 25, one day before the start of pre-season testing at the same venue, scheduled from February 26-28.
This shift marks the first significant departure from the team’s customary launch format since 2017, with the exception of the W12 in 2021. Historically, Mercedes revealed its cars at Silverstone early in the morning, followed by a filming session. As Autosport reports, the change aims to optimize the development timeline and avoid the unpredictable weather at Silverstone.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff previously quipped about the challenges of unveiling cars at Silverstone: “It always rains at Silverstone, so we decided that we don’t want to stand in the freezing rain again. Bahrain offers a much better setting for pictures and initial runs.”
Under current sporting regulations, teams may run 200km during Promotional Events, Allowing drivers George Russell and rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli to share up to 36 laps of the Sakhir circuit. This extended window provides Mercedes with additional time to refine the W16 ahead of its first on-track appearance.
Late Launch Advantage
The late unveiling also gives Mercedes the flexibility to develop its car until the last possible moment, a strategy aimed at addressing any potential performance gaps before testing begins. With four seasons into the ground-effect regulations, teams like Mercedes will likely encounter fewer early-stage issues compared to previous years.
F1 Season Launch at London’s O2 Arena

Mercedes will debut the W16 car in Bahrain, while the team will reveal its new livery during Formula 1’s official season launch event at London’s O2 Arena on February 18, commemorating the sport’s 75th anniversary. To maintain uniformity, all teams’ liveries will remain embargoed until this event.
Other Teams’ Launch Plans
- Ferrari will unveil its 2025 car on February 19 via an online event.
- Williams is set to showcase its FW47 with a bespoke one-off livery on Valentine’s Day (February 14).
- Aston Martin is expected to follow a similar online unveiling format.
- Several teams may delay their car reveals until pre-season testing begins on February 26.
This strategic shift by Mercedes underscores its intent to maximize preparation time while adapting to the evolving landscape of Formula 1’s launch traditions. Fans and analysts alike will closely watch how the W16 performs as it hits the track in Bahrain for the first time.
