Marc Cox, a former senior mechanic for McLaren, has confirmed his departure from the team after a remarkable 17-year tenure to take on a new role as chief mechanic at Aston Martin’s Evolution programme.
Cox’s career at McLaren began in 2008 when he joined the team as a number two mechanic. Over the years, he gained recognition for his expertise and dedication, eventually earning a promotion to number one mechanic in January 2015. He went on to serve as the chief mechanic for several seasons, notably working closely with Lando Norris, McLaren’s rising star.
In 2021, Cox made a significant shift within McLaren, leaving the Formula 1 division to take on the role of crew chief for the team’s Extreme E operation. After two years with McLaren’s off-road racing team, Cox has now confirmed via social media that he is moving to Aston Martin, where he will be part of the team’s Evolution programme. In this role, Cox will manage the use of previous-year’s cars at private tests and demonstration events.
Cox reflected on his time at McLaren in a heartfelt message posted on social media, writing, “After 17 years with McLaren, it’s time for my next chapter. It’s gone by so fast, I had a blast and met some amazing people along the way. I’ll miss you, papaya family.”
His departure marks the end of an era at McLaren, where Cox served as a key figure in their mechanics team. His move to Aston Martin signals an exciting new challenge in his career, and his vast experience is sure to make a significant impact on the team’s Evolution programme.
