Technical Director James Key suggests the Sauber team won’t achieve its full potential until the second year of Audi’s complete identity in Formula 1.
James Key, Sauber’s Formula 1 technical director, has hinted that the team won’t reach its pinnacle until 2027, despite significant growth and improvements expected before Audi’s full entry into the sport.
The Hinwil-based outfit, set to operate as Stake F1 for two interim seasons before Audi’s official entry, is undergoing a phase of expansion, including bolstering staff and enhancing infrastructure.
Key, who joined the team recently, acknowledges that achieving the desired state won’t align with Audi’s scheduled entry in 2026 due to the considerable transformations underway.
“There’s a comprehensive plan in place, well-documented, and we’re already executing it. Attracting the right talent is a top priority,” Key mentioned to Autosport.
“Expanding in essential areas is crucial to achieving our goals. We’re actively working on it, closely collaborating with Andreas [Seidl] for ’24 and beyond. Realistically, our intended peak won’t likely happen until ’27 as there’s much ground to cover.”
Despite this timeline, Key commends the team’s foundation and its potential for further development.
“The team’s evolution is ongoing, although relatively young. It has enjoyed stability under the current major shareholder, providing room for growth. There’s great potential to fill gaps, utilizing the existing talent and facilities,” Key emphasized.
“I believe there’s room to consolidate and recognize untapped potential that can be readily addressed with our current resources.”
