Securing a spot beside Max Verstappen at Red Bull brings perks and pitfalls. Is it a driver’s dream or a risky move that could derail a career?

The second seat at Red Bull alongside Max Verstappen is a double-edged sword. While it promises access to the fastest car on the grid, it also presents a challenge, often proving to be a stumbling block for drivers not named Max Verstappen.
In recent years, Verstappen’s teammates at Red Bull have struggled to match his pace consistently, leading to short stints for Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon. Even Sergio Perez, who has had a longer tenure, faces difficulty in keeping up with Verstappen, echoing the dynamic between Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes.
Christian Horner, Red Bull’s Team Principal, disclosed that some Formula 1 drivers are so eager to replace Perez that they would consider racing for Red Bull without pay. This move echoes Ayrton Senna’s offer to drive for Williams without payment during their dominant spell in the mid-’90s.
Acknowledging this interest, Horner emphasized Perez’s status as their driver, highlighting the significance of his performance relative to his teammate: “Checo is our driver. If he does well, we’ll want to keep him for 2025, but it’s all about how he performs in relation to his team-mate.”
However, Horner stressed the need for Perez to close the gap on Saturdays, emphasizing the importance of strong qualifying performances to secure better starting positions and stay competitive, especially with the grid potentially converging.
As contracts for many drivers expire in 2024, Red Bull finds itself in a position of choice. Horner’s remarks suggest that Perez remains their priority, yet the pressure on him to perform and match Verstappen’s pace is evident.
The allure of the Red Bull car makes it a coveted choice for drivers, but Horner’s emphasis on performance hints at the challenges and expectations that come with donning the Red Bull colors, particularly when standing next to Verstappen.
