Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the rising star set to replace Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes, has officially passed his driving test, marking a significant milestone ahead of his Formula 1 debut.
Mercedes confirmed Antonelli’s promotion ahead of last year’s Italian Grand Prix, following Hamilton’s February announcement that he would be departing the team. Despite being just 18 years old, the Bologna-born talent has already built a strong reputation, having competed in Formula 2 last season and completed extensive testing with the Brackley-based squad.
Extensive F1 Testing Experience
Antonelli has already logged significant mileage in Mercedes machinery, conducting test sessions at some of the sport’s most iconic circuits:
- Red Bull Ring (2021 Mercedes)
- Imola & Silverstone (2022 Mercedes)
- Spa-Francorchamps (August test)
- Italian Grand Prix FP1 (First official race weekend session)
- Mexican Grand Prix FP1 (Drove Hamilton’s car with a cautious approach)
- Jerez (Latest test in January 2025)
His first official F1 practice session at Monza ended in disappointment after a crash at Parabolica, but he rebounded with a measured performance in Mexico, learning from his earlier mistake.
First Italian F1 Driver Since Giovinazzi
Antonelli is set to become the first Italian driver in Formula 1 since Antonio Giovinazzi, adding another layer of excitement to his highly anticipated debut. His latest milestone—earning his road driving license—adds a touch of irony, as he now has legal permission to drive on public roads while preparing to compete in the world’s fastest racing series.
With Mercedes’ full backing, Antonelli is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing young talents on the grid as he steps into the seat of a seven-time world champion.
