Honda, after its recent decision to partner with Aston Martin for F1’s new power unit regulations in 2026, aims to maintain its support for its protege Yuki Tsunoda, even if he transitions to a different team not powered by Honda engines.

In an exclusive conversation with Autosport, Honda Racing Corporation CEO Koji Watanabe emphasized the company’s desire to monitor. Tsunoda’s progress closely and expressed hope for his eventual promotion to Red Bull Racing, irrespective of Honda’s involvement.

“Witnessing Tsunoda excel at Red Bull Racing and eventually ascending to the top teams would be a remarkable journey,” Watanabe stated. “Even in our absence, we aspire to see him thrive and fulfill his potential at the highest level.”

Highlighting Tsunoda’s roots in Honda’s racing development program. Watanabe stressed the significance of nurturing talent within the Honda Racing school and reiterated. Honda’s commitment to supporting Tsunoda’s journey to becoming a top-tier Formula 1 driver.

Regarding the prospect of maintaining personal sponsorship for Tsunoda despite potential changes in engine partnerships. Watanabe emphasized Honda’s willingness to adapt and continue backing Tsunoda’s career progression.

“Our support for Tsunoda’s growth as a driver remains unwavering, regardless of the team he represents,” Watanabe affirmed.

While a scenario where Tsunoda moves with Honda to Aston Martin remains uncertain. Watanabe acknowledged the possibility but emphasized that no decisions have been made regarding. Aston Martin’s lineup beyond Fernando Alonso’s confirmed presence.

As for the prospect of Honda fielding Tsunoda at a customer team in the future. Watanabe hinted at potential opportunities but clarified that Honda currently has no immediate plans for expansion in that direction.

Tsunoda’s impressive performance in his fourth F1 season has bolstered his standing, although discussions about a potential promotion to Red Bull Racing have yet to gain significant traction within the team.

Despite the uncertainties surrounding Tsunoda’s future team affiliations, Honda remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting his career development and aspirations in Formula 1.
