Red Bull’s motorsport consultant, Helmut Marko, has hailed Yuki Tsunoda’s exceptional performance during his home race weekend at Suzuka, likening it to the performances of multiple champions Verstappen and Fernando Alonso.
Marko commended Tsunoda’s strong showing throughout the Suzuka weekend, highlighting his impressive qualifying performance where he outpaced his teammate Daniel Ricciardo to secure the final spot in Q3. Additionally, Tsunoda showcased his overtaking prowess during the race, overtaking Lance Stroll and others to secure the final championship point.
Despite a setback at the start of the race when Tsunoda lost positions due to starting on medium compound tires, he made a remarkable recovery after switching to soft tires during the restart following his teammate’s first-lap crash.
Marko expressed his delight with Tsunoda’s performance, stating that his weekend at Suzuka was on par with the likes of Verstappen and Alonso, demonstrating flawless driving under the pressure of his home race.
Marko’s words provide encouragement to Tsunoda, suggesting that after four years with Red Bull’s second team, he may be a serious contender for promotion to the senior outfit. However, with teammate Sergio Perez performing strongly and finishing second to Verstappen in the race, Red Bull will delay making a decision on Verstappen’s teammate for next year until later in the season.
Marko emphasized that transfer rumors circulating early in the season will not influence Red Bull. Indicating that they will only announce decisions regarding personnel later in the year.
