George Russell Claims Drivers Are “Fed Up” with FIA Amid Controversial Changes

Formula 1 drivers have expressed frustration with the FIA following a series of contentious decisions, including the recent firing of race director Niels Wittich. The news surprised many, including Mercedes driver George Russell, who revealed that they had not informed drivers about the decision beforehand.

“We definitely weren’t aware,” Russell said during a press conference in Las Vegas. “It was a bit of a surprise for everybody. There’s a lot of pressure now on the new race director with just three races left.”

Russell continued to explain that drivers often feel out of the loop when it comes to important decisions that directly affect them. “Often as drivers, we probably feel like we’re the last to find out about this sort of information. When it involves us, it would be nice to be kept in the loop and understand what decisions are being made.”

The Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA) recently addressed its concerns to the FIA, calling for a more respectful approach to drivers and questioning several of the governing body’s recent policies, including those regarding swearing, jewelry, and non-regulated underwear. However, Russell revealed that the FIA has yet to respond to their open letter.

Regarding Wittich’s departure, Russell suggested that firing officials without offering a solution may not be the answer. “Sometimes just hiring and firing is not the solution,” he said. “Let’s see what this new era is going to bring, but every time there is a change, you have to take one step back before making two steps forward.”

Russell also expressed growing dissatisfaction with the FIA’s leadership. “I think if we feel that we’re being listened to and some of the changes we are requesting are implemented, then maybe our confidence will increase,” he said. “But I think there are a number of drivers who feel probably a bit fed up with the whole situation, and it only seems to be going in the wrong direction.”

The driver continued, emphasizing the desire for a shift in the sport’s direction. “We all know what we want from the sport and where we want it to go, and we probably feel that we need a small U-turn on a number of topics. We just want to work together with the FIA on this.”

Despite the recent tensions, Russell and other drivers remain hopeful that they will eventually address their concerns, paving the way for a more cooperative future with the FIA.
