As Formula One advances through the 2024 season, the sport has made significant strides toward a more sustainable and inclusive future. F1Technical’s lead journalist, Balazs Szabó, highlights several key initiatives that reflect Formula One’s commitment to both environmental responsibility and community engagement.

Bahrain The season kicked off in Bahrain, where the Manama circuit showcased a massive solar farm capable of meeting all F1 energy needs. The circuit also implemented measures to reduce waste. Including seating areas made from upcycled materials and a ban on single-use plastics by food vendors.

Saudi Arabia At the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, efforts were focused on minimizing food waste, with excess food donated to local charities. Additionally, over 40 schools participated in an educational campaign that included Saudi Arabia’s first Autism and Disability associations. The event also saw the introduction of a biodiversity program aimed at enhancing the circuit’s landscaping.

Australia The Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne introduced a variety of green energy solutions. Such as 100% Certified Green Power, solar panels, hydrogen cells, and biofuel-powered generators. Waste reduction efforts included a coffee scheme that ensured no grounds went to waste. Additionally, a low-sensory pit lane walk was organized for those with neurodivergent sensitivities.

Japan The Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka featured the use of 40% sustainable fuel for safety and medical cars. The event also gave 4,000 local families and students a community pit lane experience and donated leftover food from the paddock to local food banks.

China Ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix, Formula One published its inaugural impact report, outlining targets for achieving Net Zero by 2030. The report also detailed plans for investing in alternative fuels and next-generation operations.

Miami The Miami Grand Prix provided local minority-owned food and beverage vendors with the opportunity to trade at the event. They gave local students behind-the-scenes tours of the Miami International Autodrome and selected 19 students from local colleges for internships to gain experience in various operational areas.

Emilia-Romagna The Imola circuit partnered with a local female mechanics program to promote inclusion in Formula One. The Il Tortellante initiative taught people with autism how to make pasta. While the Awabots program connected young fans from a local hospital with their F1 heroes via live video.

Monaco In Monaco, a bespoke water desalination system converted seawater into fresh water for washing reusable cups. The Automobile Club Monaco collaborated with Resin’Esterel to upcycle last year’s bibs, posters, and signage into merchandise.

Canada The Canadian Grand Prix engaged STEM students, offering them the chance to speak with drivers and engineers. The event achieved a 97% rate of attendees using low-carbon transport methods and included local children from vulnerable situations in the grid ceremony.

Spain At the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, they installed 1,239 new solar panels and launched a biodiversity program to utilize the surrounding 25 hectares of forest. The circuit also repurposed oil drums and tyres from previous events for venue infrastructure.

Austria In Austria, the Red Bull Ring promoted green transport options and prioritized local produce. With 85% of key suppliers from Austria and half from the Styria region. A special paddock tour and Strudel-making experience were organized for disadvantaged Austrian youths.

Great Britain Silverstone enhanced its sustainability efforts by utilizing various renewable energy sources and creating the Zero Zone. A fan area focused on sustainability education. The event also raised over £60,000 for charities and welcomed critically ill children and their families for behind-the-scenes tours.

Hungary The Hungarian Grand Prix featured initiatives to promote plastic recycling and sustainability. Including a low-carbon energy generation system that reduced carbon emissions by over 90%. The Institute for the Blind hosted a paddock walk and showcased Braille-focused art in the Fan Zone.

Belgium The Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps encouraged the use of public transport, resulting in a 40% increase in fans opting for greener travel. A special pit lane walk allowed children from a local charity to experience the event up close.

Through these initiatives, Formula One is demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainability and community engagement. Paving the way for a more responsible and inclusive future in motorsport.
