Ferrari’s recent unveiling of the SF-24 car for the 2024 Formula 1 season signals a strategic evolution rather than a radical departure from its predecessor, the SF-23. Despite the team’s desire to address weaknesses, they aimed to build upon the strengths of their previous model, which delivered notable success in the latter part of the 2023 season.
Chassis technical director Enrico Cardile emphasized that the decision to refine rather than revolutionize their car concept stemmed from a desire to maximize performance potential. He noted that while the SF-23 showed promise, the team believed they had reached the limit of its capabilities and needed to explore a new direction to further enhance performance.
Regarding the suspension configuration, Ferrari opted to maintain their preference for a push rod system, diverging from solutions favored by other teams like Red Bull and McLaren. Cardile explained that while they experiment with alternatives, they found no significant advantage in deviating from their chosen setup.

While the front suspension remains largely unchanged from the previous model, engineers have made significant revisions to the rear suspension geometry and gearbox layout. These alterations reflect Ferrari’s commitment to refining key components to achieve optimal performance.
Another area of focus for Ferrari has been improving straight line speed, leading to the development of revamped rear wing configurations tailored to different track requirements. By prioritizing aerodynamic enhancements, Ferrari aims to strike a balance between single lap performance and race durability.
Cardile emphasized the importance of achieve a car design that excels in both qualifying and race conditions. While Ferrari aims to maintain their competitive edge in qualifying, they also seek to enhance race performance by ensuring the car’s drivability and durability over long stints.
Ultimately, the success of Ferrari’s evolutionary approach will be determined by its ability to deliver consistent performance across various track conditions and race scenarios. As they continue testing and refining the SF-24, Ferrari remains optimistic about their prospects for the upcoming season.
