Fernando Alonso’s ‘Relentless Rookie’ Approach Energizes Aston Martin F1 Team

Despite being the oldest driver on the Formula 1 grid, Fernando Alonso continues to exhibit the enthusiasm and energy reminiscent of a rookie, according to his Aston Martin team. The two-time world champion, who joined Aston Martin from Alpine for the 2023 season, has made a significant impact on the team’s performance and work culture.

Alonso’s move to Aston Martin initially raised eyebrows, given his history of bold team changes that didn’t always yield success. However, his arrival coincided with the team’s impressive form with the launch spec of its 2023 car, leading to six podium finishes in the first eight races.

Team boss Mike Krack highlighted Alonso’s rookie-like energy and work ethic as one of the team’s major gains. Krack stated, “We had a driver here where you think it’s his first season, he was just full of energy, not only driving us but also driving himself and being the first in the office.”

Performance director Tom McCullough praised Alonso’s relentless drive to push the team forward, describing him as a positive force who exceeded expectations. McCullough emphasized Alonso’s efficiency in providing feedback, knowledge, and constructive contributions to the team.

While Aston Martin faced challenges and saw a performance dip later in the 2023 season, Alonso’s influence on team dynamics remained positive. Krack expressed pride in the team’s ability to handle challenges without public conflicts and emphasized the cohesion among team members.

As Alonso prepares for his 21st season in Formula 1, he continues to display curiosity and enthusiasm for improving his driving skills. The 42-year-old driver, who turns 43 in July, hinted that the expanding F1 calendar might play a more significant role in his retirement decision than his driving capabilities.

Aston Martin is hopeful of extending Alonso’s contract beyond 2024, with Krack expressing a desire to continue the collaboration if the positive dynamics are maintained. Despite his age, Alonso’s impact on and off the track suggests he remains a valuable asset to the team.
