Benjamin Sesko revealed that he believed joining RB Leipzig was a better choice than moving to Manchester United when he made his initial transfer.
The young striker, who rose to prominence with Red Bull Salzburg, faced a decision when he departed the Austrian club last summer. Despite interest from some of Europe’s top clubs, he ultimately opted for Leipzig. The shared ownership between the two clubs facilitated this move.
Sesko, who has continued to impress, is expected to command a significant transfer fee this summer and is reportedly leaning towards a move to Arsenal. The 20-year-old has just scored 18 goals for the second consecutive year and preferred Leipzig over United because he felt their style of play suited him better.
Reflecting on his move to Leipzig, he stated, “I didn’t really participate in these kinds of conversations, but I think it was better to come here.”
Sesko’s agent, Elvis Basanovic, has been attending Arsenal matches this season, indicating the club’s interest in the young forward. His arrival could address Arsenal’s forward issues, with Kai Havertz often deployed as a false 9.
Despite his relatively short tenure at the club, Leipzig may sell Sesko this summer if they can negotiate the right deal. The German club has a track record of selling their top players for substantial profits, and Sesko could be the latest to move on.
If Arsenal fails to secure a deal for Sesko, they have other targets on their radar, including Ajax’s Brian Brobbey and Brighton’s Evan Ferguson. They have opted against pursuing Ivan Toney or Newcastle’s Alexander Isak.
Last summer, Manchester United signed Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta as they sought a new No 9. While there were links with a move for Harry Kane, the club ultimately prioritized the young Dane due to financial considerations.
United anticipated that Hojlund would require time to adapt, and indeed, it took him months before scoring his first league goal. The FA Cup final victory over Manchester City at Wembley left him on the bench.
