West Ham United has officially announced Julen Lopetegui as the successor to David Moyes, confirming his appointment as head coach. Lopetegui has signed a two-year deal with an option for a third season.
Following the departure of Moyes at the end of his contract after four and a half successful years, Lopetegui steps in, having been available since his departure from Wolves last August.
Lopetegui, a former manager of Spain and Real Madrid, notably clinched the Europa League title with Sevilla in 2020. During his tenure at Wolves last season, he steered the team away from relegation troubles, finishing 13th despite taking over in November. His departure from Wolves stemmed from concerns over their transfer activity.
With West Ham, Lopetegui will have the resources to bolster the squad, with potential signings on the horizon. Talks are underway for the acquisition of 28-year-old Brazilian center-back Fabricio Bruno from Flamengo and 19-year-old winger Wesley Gassova from Corinthians.
The club’s transfer budget may also be influenced by the possible departure of Lucas Paquetá, subject to Manchester City’s interest.
However, any move for Paquetá hinges on the resolution of a Football Association investigation into alleged betting breaches, which the midfielder denies. West Ham is adamant about retaining Ghanaian attacker Mohammed Kudus.
Expressing his delight about joining West Ham, Lopetegui stated, “We came here with the idea and the thought to make a big, big noise.” He emphasized his ambition to achieve significant success with the club, highlighting his desire to constantly improve and compete at the highest level.
Lopetegui, who will officially assume his role on 1 July, emphasized his commitment to driving the team forward, stating, “My ambition as a coach is always to be better and better, to achieve more and bigger aims and to encourage and improve the players, the team, and to compete because football is about this – to compete. We are very ambitious about this.”
Additionally, West Ham disclosed that Lopetegui would be accompanied by five members of his backroom staff as he embarks on his tenure with the club.
