Naby Keita’s return to Germany with Werder Bremen has taken a downward turn as the midfielder faces suspension for the remainder of the season, adding to his woes in his first campaign back in his home country.
Keita, who previously played for Liverpool, departed Anfield on a free transfer after a stint plagued by injury concerns. Despite being part of Liverpool’s successful Champions League and Premier League-winning squads, his time on Merseyside was hampered by frequent injuries.
The 29-year-old made the move to Werder Bremen in the summer but has struggled to find his footing due to ongoing injury issues. With just five appearances for the club, Keita’s frustration came to a head when he opted not to join the squad for their recent fixture against Bayer Leverkusen upon learning he wasn’t included in the team.
In response to his actions, Werder Bremen has taken disciplinary action. Suspending Keita for the rest of the season and imposing a significant fine on him. The club cited Keita’s behavior as unacceptable. Emphasizing the need for unity and focus as they approach the final games of the season.

Clemens Fritz, the club’s head of football, stressed that there were no alternatives to the measures taken against Keita. Highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
Keita, however, took to social media to refute suggestions of misconduct. Asserting his professionalism and dedication to the club and its supporters. He expressed his commitment to training and performing at his best for the team.
While Keita’s future at Werder Bremen was initially secured with a reported three-year deal upon his arrival. His suspension raises questions about his tenure at the club moving forward.
