Liverpool’s goalkeeping coach, John Achterberg, is poised to join forces once again with club legend Steven Gerrard, as he departs Anfield at the conclusion of the season.
Achterberg, 52, has accepted a new role in the Saudi Pro League as part of Gerrard’s coaching staff at Al-Ettifaq, following his decision to depart Liverpool alongside Jurgen Klopp at the end of the Premier League campaign.
The Dutchman brings a wealth of expertise accumulated over his impressive 15-year tenure at Liverpool. Gerrard, having observed Achterberg’s work closely during his time at the club, will now welcome him into his coaching setup.
Achterberg initially arrived at Liverpool’s academy in 2009 under the management of Rafa Benitez before assuming a senior role two years later. He played a pivotal role in identifying Alisson Becker as a potential target, ultimately contributing to the Brazilian goalkeeper’s £67 million transfer from Roma in 2018.

Reflecting on his departure from Liverpool, Achterberg expressed gratitude for the incredible journey he and his family have experienced at the club. He acknowledged the privilege of working for Liverpool, highlighting the unwavering support of fans worldwide.
Additionally, he lauded Klopp’s leadership, attributing the club’s success to the manager’s exceptional managerial skills and ability to inspire belief and victory.
Achterberg’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter at Liverpool, as the club navigates changes both on and off the field with the conclusion of Klopp’s era.
