Thomas Muller could leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season, reports suggest

Thomas Müller, a Bayern Munich icon, may be nearing the end of his illustrious career at the club, with reports suggesting that Bayern will not offer him a contract extension when his current deal expires in June. At 35, Müller’s contract situation has been widely discussed, with sources like SportBild and Kicker reporting that Bayern prefers to save on his significant wages rather than renew his contract.

Müller made his Bayern debut in 2008 under Jurgen Klinsmann, and his breakthrough season came under Louis van Gaal in 2009. Over the years, Müller has become the club’s most-capped player, with 742 appearances and 247 goals in all competitions, including Bundesliga titles, Champions League wins, and Club World Cups. He has won an incredible 12 Bundesliga titles and two Champions Leagues, with the chance to add more silverware this season as Bayern leads the Bundesliga by six points and prepares for a Champions League quarterfinal clash with Inter Milan.

However, Müller’s playing time has been limited this season, with most of his 23 Bundesliga appearances coming as a substitute. He has made only three starts in the Champions League out of 10 appearances. Despite his reduced role, Müller remains an experienced and intelligent presence on the field.

Reports indicate that Bayern’s board informed Müller’s representatives two weeks ago that his contract wouldn’t be renewed, a stark contrast to recent extensions for other key players like Manuel Neuer and Joshua Kimmich. Müller reportedly hoped to play for at least another season. Bayern may offer him a short-term contract extension to allow him to participate in the inaugural Club World Cup in the U.S. this summer.
