As Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona prepare to face off in a Champions League quarter final rematch at Parc des Princes, memories of Barcelona’s legendary comeback against PSG in 2017 are inevitably resurfacing. However, in today’s era of video assistant referees (VAR), such a miraculous turn around may never have occurred.
Back in 2017, Barcelona secured a remarkable 6-1 victory over PSG at Camp Nou, progressing 6-5 on aggregate. However, former PSG manager Unai Emery lamented that VAR’s absence played a significant role in their elimination, citing several contentious refereeing decisions.
PSG lodged a formal complaint with UEFA, highlighting eight incidents during the game. Referee Deniz Aytekin, who officiated the match, faced criticism and was subsequently relegated by UEFA. Limiting his role to group stage matches in the following seasons. Despite stepping down as an international referee in 2022, Aytekin continues to officiate domestically.
In a retrospective analysis by French publication L’Equipe in 2021, leading referee Said Ennjimi reviewed the match and identified potential game changing decisions. Ennjimi suggested that Barcelona’s Gerard Pique should have received a red card for a reckless challenge on Edinson Cavani. While Javier Mascherano’s foul on Angel di Maria warranted a penalty for PSG.

Pique’s challenge, described as “uncontrolled” and “endangering,” went unpunished, while Mascherano’s tackle from behind on Di Maria was deemed worthy of a penalty and a potential red card upon VAR review.
Despite controversy surrounding Barcelona’s late penalty awarded by Aytekin. VAR likely would not have overturned the decision, according to L’Equipe’s analysis.
While many key figures from that memorable evening have since moved on, PSG remains haunted by the result. Particularly as they continue their pursuit of a maiden Champions League title. Despite reaching the quarter-finals, skepticism surrounds PSG’s chances this season, with few confident of their success.
As PSG and Barcelona prepare to renew their rivalry, the absence of VAR in 2017 still resonates. Serving as a reminder of how technology has reshaped the game’s dynamics and outcomes.
