Before their historic Champions League triumph in 1999, Manchester United had a significant test against Liverpool in the FA Cup fourth round, setting the stage for their later heroics.
Just four months before their memorable victory over Bayern Munich, United staged a dramatic comeback to defeat Liverpool 2-1 at Old Trafford. Dwight Yorke equalized in the 88th minute, followed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s stoppage-time winner.
The defeat was a bitter pill for Liverpool, who had led since Michael Owen’s early goal. For manager Gerard Houllier, it revealed underlying issues within the squad as he attempted to modernize and change its character.
Houllier aimed to emulate the transformation Arsene Wenger had achieved at Arsenal. To do so, he felt the need to send a message to the senior players, setting examples for the younger generation.
Paul Ince, Liverpool’s captain at the time and a former United midfielder, found himself at odds with Houllier from the outset. His substitution in the 71st minute by Jason McAteer marked a turning point, sparking tension within the squad.

The defeat against Manchester United served as a catalyst for change, with young talents like Steven Gerrard beginning to emerge. Houllier’s message to the squad was clear: defiance would not be tolerated as he sought to reshape Liverpool’s identity.
