Ian Wright Discusses Departure from BBC Match of the Day and Addresses Potential Move to Sky Sports

After 27 years, Ian Wright has decided to leave BBC Match of the Day, citing a need for change in his career trajectory. The Arsenal legend, who first appeared on the show in 1997 while still playing. Announced his departure late last year but clarified that he is “not leaving to go to Sky.”

Wright will continue his punditry work, including being part of ITV’s Euro 2024 coverage. Additionally, he hosts his own podcast, Wrighty’s House, and is a regular on The Overlap alongside Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, and Roy Keane. In an interview with GQ, Wright shared insights into his decision to part ways with Match of the Day.

“It’s time. Match of the Day is so iconic, so it’s a tough one,” Wright explained. “But, for me, it’s just run its course. I’m done.” The demanding schedule of Match of the Day, with its late-night broadcasts during the Premier League season. Became increasingly taxing for Wright. Who had to travel from London to Salford for filming, returning home well into the early hours of the morning.

“It takes me two or three days to get over that. I’m 60 now [and] it’s just taken its toll,” he elaborated.

While Wright recently appeared as a guest pundit on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, rumors circulated that he was leaving Match of the Day to join Sky full-time. However, Wright clarified that he has no intention of joining another broadcaster permanently.

“You might see me pop up on MNF, but I’m not leaving to go to Sky,” he affirmed. “I’ve got something to offer, but, at the same time, it’s got to be on my own terms.”

Last year, Wright expressed his desire to spend more time with his family and engage in other aspects of life outside of punditry. “I’m going to actually watch more football. I’m going to watch my granddaughter,” he shared, “I’m going to watch a lot more women’s games, I’m going to watch a lot more Arsenal games, just to be there with fans.”

His decision reflects a desire to prioritize quality time with loved ones and immerse himself more fully in the footballing experience.
