Rivals Aim to Disrupt Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s Wrexham Documentary

The ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ docuseries has begun to unsettle opposing teams, as clubs strive to play the role of the villain in front of the show’s millions of future viewers.

According to Wrexham goalkeeper Mark Howard, signed by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in 2022, the series has caused a stir among the team’s competitors. With the upcoming release of season three on May 2. The documentary’s growing popularity has become a significant platform for players, staff, and rival teams to leave their mark. Howard believes that opponents are being distracted by the effects of the documentary, giving Wrexham a psychological advantage before matches even begin.

“We’re hearing a lot from opposing players, staff, and fans,” Howard revealed to OLBG regarding the backlash from rival clubs due to their docuseries. “But we don’t mind it. We know it’s already playing on their minds, giving us a slight edge before the game even starts.”

Mark Howard observed that Wrexham holds an on-field advantage due to their documentary

“The comments are constant. We find it amusing that we’ve gotten under their skin,” Howard continued. “It’s a motivational tool that people try to use against us, but we’re used to it. It’s been a bit of a media circus at this level, but as players and staff, we’ve embraced it.”

“A lot of away teams want to spoil the party and play the role of the villain in the Welcome to Wrexham episode,” Howard added.

Despite not being able to clinch the league title this season, Wrexham has secured promotion to League One. Marking their return to the Football League after a 15-year absence. The ambitious owners, Reynolds and McElhenney, have set their sights on reaching the Premier League. A goal that once seemed improbable when they took over the club in the fifth tier.

“Now that we’re heading into the third tier, the Premier League doesn’t seem too far away,” Howard remarked. “Our aim is to maintain our momentum and continue building. League One presents new challenges, but with the backing from the owners, we’re excited for what lies ahead.”
