Rachel Dugdale, currently playing for Reading in the Championship, has showcased remarkable resilience after overcoming a career-threatening anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. The 27-year-old full-back suffered the setback during her time at Charlton Athletic in February 2022, ruling her out of contention for a spot in the Northern Ireland squad at the Euro 2022 finals.

Dugdale’s determined comeback has not gone unnoticed, earning her a call-up to the Northern Ireland squad for the Nations League play-off against Montenegro. Her return to international action in the first leg, coming on as a substitute, marked a poignant moment in her journey back to top-level football.

Speaking about her injury and subsequent recovery, Dugdale stated, “An ACL injury is quite common in women’s football. Unfortunately, it was a really long injury, which was tough, but some brilliant things came out of it. I’m just trying to enjoy my football as much as possible.”

Despite the challenging rehabilitation process, Dugdale’s impressive performances for Reading paved the way for her international return. Her introduction in the first leg against Montenegro had a strategic impact, with her presence allowing a tactical shift that contributed to Northern Ireland’s victory.

Dugdale expressed gratitude for the opportunity, saying, “It’s been amazing to be back in with the girls and getting back on the pitch. I didn’t expect it. So it was brilliant to be given the opportunity, and Tanya put her trust in me to come on the pitch.”

Looking ahead to the second leg of the Nations League play-off, Dugdale emphasized the importance of playing at Windsor Park and the need to stay focused on the process rather than the outcome. She acknowledged the pressure of the game but emphasized the excitement and readiness for the challenge.

Dugdale’s journey stands as a testament to resilience and determination, demonstrating that set backs can lead to come backs with the right mindset and perseverance.
