Virgil van Dijk has urged Liverpool to maintain their focus as they lead Premier League title race, despite mounting expectations. The Reds head into this weekend’s clash with Manchester City eight points clear at the top, with Pep Guardiola’s champions currently in disarray, having lost five of their last six matches across all competitions.
However, Van Dijk remains cautious and insists that the team is staying grounded despite their strong position. “It’s the experience that will obviously help you, in my opinion, and it should help you, and my feeling is, it will,” Van Dijk said in a recent interview. “If you play for Liverpool, you always have these expectations. Everyone in the Premier League would love to be where we are right now. I’m a winner. I want to win in everything I compete in.”
The 33-year-old captain, who led Liverpool to a Premier-League title in 2020, has seen his team come close in previous-seasons. In 2022, City narrowly edged them to the title, and Van Dijk is determined to not let that happen again. “We’re going to give it a try, we’re going to go for it and hopefully enjoy it,” he said. “We know we’ll face difficult moments and play poorly at times, but we need to find a way to win. If you’re ready to suffer and overcome challenges, it could be a special season, but we’ll see. We just have to enjoy the ride.”
While Manchester City faces an uncertain spell, Liverpool is in excellent form, having won five of their last six matches across all competitions. Van Dijk, who has been playing some of the best football of his career, has singled out two of his teammates for special praise. Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo, both Dutch internationals like Van Dijk, have been key contributors in manager Arne Slot’s revamped system. Van Dijk commended their performances and dedication, highlighting their potential for growth.
“The way we play and the way they have been playing has definitely helped them reach the level of performances they’re showing,” Van Dijk noted. “They are great guys, level-headed, work hard every day, and want to improve. They’re exceptional players and can only get better.”
Outside of football, Van Dijk recently took part in a heartwarming visit to a Ronald McDonald House, where he surprised a young fan named Oliver. The experience, which highlighted the importance of the club’s community involvement, resonated deeply with the Dutch defender. “Meeting young Oliver was a humbling experience,” Van Dijk reflected. “It shows the impact we have on the community. Places like the Ronald McDonald House make such a difference to families in difficult times. And donations are more vital than ever to keep these places running.”
As Liverpool continues its push for the title, Van Dijk remains focused on the journey ahead, ready to face whatever challenges arise and ensure the team stays on track for success.
