Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has urged his teammates to stay grounded after their impressive 2-0 victory over reigning champions Manchester City extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to 11 points.
The Reds delivered another commanding performance under manager Arne Slot, leaving City trailing by a significant margin. With this result, Liverpool also hold a nine-point advantage over second-placed Arsenal, even though the season is still in its early stages.
However, van Dijk, who has experienced the highs and lows of title races in previous years, is keen to remind his teammates that the season is far from decided. “Good game. We won and we move on,” the Dutch defender told Sky Sports after the match. “We focus on the next game. That’s the only thing we can do. There’s no point at this stage of the season to get ahead of ourselves.”
While acknowledging the satisfaction of being in such a strong position, van Dijk highlighted the unpredictable nature of the season. “Of course, everybody wants to be in a position where they are 11 points ahead, but there are so many twists and turns. We have injuries to deal with, unfortunately.”

Van Dijk himself expressed disappointment for not scoring more goals, having missed three clear-cut chances during the game. “City is a fantastic team; four-time champions in a row,” he said. “They have the quality to punish any team. But I think we were solid defensively and had great chances. We could have scored more.”
Manager Arne Slot echoed van Dijk’s caution, stressing the importance of consistency if Liverpool are to achieve their goals this-season. Slot, who also led the team to a dominant Champions League win over Real Madrid earlier in the week. Emphasized that success is about more than just one or two big wins.
“If you want to win anything, it’s not about what you are able to do, but it’s all about consistency,” Slot explained. “We need to keep our-players fit, maintain this level of energy, and not get carried away by one or two-victories. Teams like City, Real Madrid, Arsenal, and Chelsea are all capable of going on long winning streaks, so we have to stay focused.”
The Liverpool manager also pointed out the challenges ahead, as he only had five available defenders for the match. “There’s still a long way to go and many challenges ahead. But it’s good that we are capable of winning against top teams in our own style.”
