Pep Guardiola has hit back at Manchester City’s Premier League rivals, claiming that a significant majority of clubs want the reigning champions relegated.
The comments come as City awaits the outcome of the 115 charges against them for alleged financial regulation breaches. Guardiola, who recently signed a new two-year contract extension, was outspoken in his defense of the club, stating, “I read something about the situation and how you need to be relegated immediately. Seventy-five per cent of the clubs want it – I know what they do behind the scenes.”
Guardiola’s remarks follow a recent blow for City’s legal team, as Premier League clubs voted 16-4 in favor of amendments to the rules surrounding Associated Partner Transactions (APT). The changes came after City had successfully challenged certain aspects of the regulations, but the Premier League has now amended the rules to their satisfaction.
Despite the ongoing off-field challenges, Guardiola remained defiant, stating, “I prefer not to be in that position, but once it’s there, I love it. It’s because you believe in your club, and the people there. I believe what they say to me and the reasons why.”

Guardiola also reaffirmed his commitment to Manchester City, even in the event of a severe punishment. “What happens if we are relegated? I will be here. I feel it now,” he declared, recalling his comments from 12 months ago when he stated he would manage the club in League One if necessary.
Although the possibility of relegation was surely a consideration in his contract negotiations, Guardiola denied it was a decisive factor in his decision to extend his stay at the club. He emphasized his focus on improving City’s form, which has seen them lose four consecutive matches in all competitions, including a setback in the Carabao Cup, and fall five points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.
Guardiola’s contract extension was completed swiftly, with negotiations reportedly wrapping up in just two hours. Reflecting on the smooth process, he said, “Maybe I am arrogant, but I think we deserve to continue for what we have done in the last years.”
As City looks to turn around their recent struggles, Guardiola’s next challenge is leading the team to a much-needed win against Tottenham at the Etihad Stadium this evening.
