Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has addressed the tension during his post-match interview following his team’s 6-3 loss to Liverpool, acknowledging that reporters have tried to “poke the bear” this season. Ange Postecoglou responded sharply when questioned about how injuries have affected Tottenham’s ability to maintain their high-intensity, attacking style.
After the heavy defeat, Postecoglou showed visible frustration when reporters asked about his team’s inability to maintain their demanding game plan. He pointed to the club’s injury crisis, which has seen key players sidelined, as a major factor in the loss. “I’m just going to stop answering these questions,” he said. “If people can’t see the obvious, I’m not going to point it out. Make of it what you want — yes, we’re conceding goals, but we’re missing a goalkeeper, two centre-backs, and a left-back. That hasn’t coincided with what we’re trying to do.”
The manager’s comments came after Tottenham’s first-choice goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario, and central defenders Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, as well as left-back Destiny Udogie, were all unavailable for the match.
Ahead of Tottenham’s Boxing Day fixture against Nottingham Forest — which will likely feature Udogie’s return — Postecoglou clarified that he was not angry and emphasized that a manager naturally feels less upbeat after a painful defeat. “I wasn’t angry, but I don’t know many managers who are cheery after a defeat,” he explained. “I am getting tired of the same questions over and over, and it feels like people are trying to poke the bear to get a reaction. After a loss, it’s easier for people to get that reaction from me.”
Liverpool outclassed Tottenham, scoring five goals in the first half before Tottenham mounted a brief comeback to make it 5-3, only for Liverpool to secure the win. Despite the defeat, Postecoglou reassured fans that the players remain committed to his vision for the team. “I still believe the players have real faith in what we’re doing,” he said. “It’s a tough day for everyone, but I try to reiterate that this is all for a greater purpose. I am responsible for bringing success to the club, and while the situation is challenging, the players remain determined to work hard.”
Postecoglou’s comments highlight both his frustration with the constant questioning and his ongoing belief in the team’s potential despite recent setbacks.
