Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn has weighed in on the Gunners’ potential January transfer window activity, offering a perspective that may divide fans. As Arsenal competes in a tight Premier League title race with Liverpool and Manchester City, speculation about bolstering the squad has intensified, particularly regarding the acquisition of a striker.
One name linked to the North London club is Viktor Gyökeres, the Swedish forward currently excelling in Portugal with Sporting CP. However, Winterburn, a three-time league champion with Arsenal, believes Mikel Arteta’s squad may not require a marquee forward signing to achieve success.
“Hopefully, I’m wrong, and we do bring someone in to strengthen the squad,” Winterburn said. “But my question would be, where? People debate the center-forward role, but Arsenal were one of the top scorers in the Premier League last season. That tells me the goals are already there.”
The former defender noted that while inconsistency in scoring may fuel the debate, recent results suggest that Arsenal can thrive with their current setup. “When we don’t score, the first cry is for a striker. But we’ve scored eight goals in our last two games, showing that if we play to our potential, everything works fine. This debate will likely continue all season.”
Winterburn also expressed skepticism about Arsenal’s ability to secure significant reinforcements in the January window, citing the difficulty of prying top talent from Champions League-contending clubs mid-season. “I think Mikel Arteta will be happy with his squad. They’ll always look to improve, but January is tricky. I hope I’m wrong, but I have my doubts about a big signing happening now.”
The Arsenal icon acknowledged that the players themselves would welcome new arrivals, provided they don’t threaten their positions. “The squad will be delighted if a signing strengthens the team, but no player wants competition in their exact role. If someone can genuinely improve the squad, I’m sure the manager and club will do everything to make it happen. Still, January deals are much harder to execute than summer transfers.”
