Manchester City has secured one of Brazil’s brightest young talents, signing 19-year-old defender Vitor Reis from Palmeiras for £29.6m. This transfer, part of City’s ongoing squad evolution, follows the acquisition of Lens centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov, bringing their total January spending to £63.4m.
Reis, regarded as one of the most promising young defenders in world football, joins a growing list of stars to emerge from Palmeiras’ academy. Over the years, the Sao Paulo-based club has produced and sold talents such as Real Madrid’s Endrick, West Ham’s Luiz Guilherme, and Nottingham Forest’s Danilo.
Despite making just 22 senior appearances since his debut in June 2023, City believes Reis is ready for the Premier League. Palmeiras originally hoped to retain him until this summer’s Club World Cup but ultimately agreed to let him leave early after City pushed for an immediate move. Hugo Viana, City’s incoming director of football, played a pivotal role in finalizing the deal by leveraging his relationship with Palmeiras coach Abel Ferreira.
Palmeiras has dubbed Reis an “ET,” a term the club reserves for players who are “out of this world.” Joao Paulo Sampaio, Palmeiras’ head of academy, reflected on Reis’ impact, jokingly noting, “Don’t ask me for another ET this season. Now we get the normal ones.”
City’s coaching staff sees Reis as a perfect fit for Pep Guardiola’s style of play. Lucas Andrade, Palmeiras’ under-20 coach, explained, “Reis is already accustomed to playing under pressure, building from the back, and excelling in one-on-one situations. His composure and tactical awareness make him a natural fit for City’s system.”
Often compared to Ruben Dias, Reis has shown leadership qualities throughout his young career. He captained Brazil at the 2023 Under-17 World Cup and quickly established himself as a leader in Palmeiras’ senior squad. His journey from Sao Jose dos Campos to the Palmeiras academy is a testament to his dedication, with his parents making daily 200-kilometer commutes to support his dreams until he moved into the club’s dormitory.
Reis’ versatility as both a center-back and full-back, combined with his technical ability, speed, and mental fortitude, has drawn admiration from top clubs across Europe, including Real Madrid and Arsenal. “In terms of quality, he has it all—technique, speed, courage, and leadership. The kid is complete,” said Sampaio.
Reis will now join Pep Guardiola’s squad as part of a reshaping effort that includes Khusanov and ongoing talks with Eintracht Frankfurt for striker Omar Marmoush. His arrival bolsters City’s defensive options and signals their commitment to investing in the next generation of global football talent.
As City looks to maintain their dominance in England and Europe, Reis’ signing represents a key step in building for the future. The young Brazilian has all the tools to thrive at the Etihad and under Guardiola’s guidance, he is expected to develop into one of the game’s elite defenders.
