Chelsea snapped a five-game Premier League winless run with a crucial 3-1 victory over Wolves at Stamford Bridge, reclaiming fourth place in the table ahead of their upcoming clash with champions Manchester City.
After a shaky first half that saw goalkeeper Robert Sánchez gift Wolves an equalizer, Chelsea regrouped in the second half with goals from Marc Cucurella and Noni Madueke, sealing a much-needed win for Enzo Maresca’s side. The result also capitalized on Newcastle’s slip-up against Bournemouth, boosting Chelsea’s position in the top four.
A Nervy Start and Defensive Woes
The match began with Chelsea displaying familiar vulnerabilities. Injuries forced Maresca into recalling Trevoh Chalobah from his loan spell, and the defender quickly made his presence felt, denying Wolves forward Jørgen Strand Larsen an early scoring opportunity. Despite Chalobah’s efforts, Chelsea’s backline, missing key players like Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana, showed signs of fragility.

Noni Madueke, lively on the right flank, spearheaded Chelsea’s early attacks. His direct play tested Wolves’ defense, while Cole Palmer threatened with a long-range effort despite struggling with an ankle issue. Chelsea eventually broke the deadlock through Tosin Adarabioyo, who converted after a James corner was only partially cleared.
However, Chelsea’s momentum faltered as Sánchez’s continued inconsistency in goal cost them dearly. A poorly handled Wolves corner allowed Matt Doherty to level the score on the stroke of halftime, leaving Stamford Bridge tense and Chelsea’s faith in Sánchez under scrutiny.
Second-Half Revival

Faced with the challenge of regaining control, Chelsea began the second half with increased composure. Palmer orchestrated play in midfield, linking up well with his teammates. The turning point came when Moisés Caicedo’s aggressive pressing forced an error, sparking a counterattack. Cucurella, charging into the box unnoticed, coolly finished from close range after Madueke’s pinpoint delivery was flicked on by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
The goal restored Chelsea’s confidence, and the home side soon added a third. Wolves struggled once again with defending set pieces, as Chalobah headed a Palmer corner that Madueke nudged over the line to seal the victory.
Relief for Chelsea, Woes for Wolves
Chelsea eased off in the closing stages, with Maresca introducing Jadon Sancho to manage the game. Wolves, meanwhile, were left to rue their defensive frailties, which continue to mire them in relegation trouble, sitting just outside the bottom three on goal difference.
The win provided a timely morale boost for Chelsea ahead of their trip to face Manchester City. With the top-four race heating up, Maresca will hope this performance can mark a turning point in their campaign.
