Harry Maguire, the 31-year-old Manchester United defender, has extended his contract at Old Trafford, keeping him at the club until at least June 2026. Maguire’s renewed confidence came after a challenging period in recent seasons, during which his performances often came under scrutiny, and he became a frequent target for criticism, particularly from rival fanbases.
Since Ruben Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag as manager, Maguire has rediscovered his form, looking sharper and more confident in the heart of United’s defense. The centre-back, who joined the club in 2019 for an £80 million transfer from Leicester City, was set to see his contract expire at the end of the current season. However, both Maguire and the club have activated an automatic renewal clause, ensuring his future at Carrington for at least another three years.
Speaking after Manchester United’s FA Cup victory over Arsenal, Maguire explained how Amorim’s straightforward advice played a significant role in his decision to trigger the contract extension clause. According to the Sheffield native, Amorim simply told him that activating the option was a “no brainer.”

Maguire reflected on this pivotal conversation:
“Ruben said to me that when it came across to him that I had an option [in my contract], he said it was a no brainer for him.”
“It’s given me confidence and belief that they want me at the club and part of this project. He’s really demanding. And I’m happy to be here. I want this club to be back fighting for titles and not fighting where we are in the table right now. We’ve got a long way to go.”
Maguire acknowledged the ups and downs of his time at United, admitting that his third season was especially challenging, particularly under Ralf Rangnick‘s interim management. However, the England international feels he’s been performing consistently well over the past 18 months, bouncing back from the setback and striving to continue improving.
He said:
“I think my first couple of years at United were probably the best part of my career. I’m 31 now, coming up to 32 in a couple of months, but I’m getting back to that level. I also think I was at that level last season as well, so it’s been 18 months now where I’d say I’ve been playing consistently well for this club again.”
Reflecting on the difficult third season, Maguire added:
“There’s no doubt I had a tough year in my third season when Ralf took over, I wasn’t at my best, I knew that, I knew I needed to find something to stay at this club because it demands high standards and I feel like I’ve found something. Mentally and physically I feel good.”
With his future secured and a renewed sense of belief, Maguire now focuses on helping United climb up the table and return to their former glory.
