This summer has seen significant changes at Villa Park as Aston Villa prepares for its Premier League opener. Manager Unai Emery faced the dual challenge of balancing financial constraints and gearing up for a Champions League campaign. The club’s strategy involved a mix of high-profile departures and new acquisitions, reshaping the squad significantly.

To balance the books and fund new signings, Villa sold key players such as Douglas Luiz and Moussa Diaby, raising £120 million. Despite the initial concern that these funds might not directly enhance Emery’s squad, the club’s owners, Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens, have invested in a series of promising young talents, aiming to build a team for both the present and future.

Among the notable summer arrivals are Amadou Onana from Everton and Ian Maatsen from Chelsea, both aged 22. These signings, alongside younger prospects like Cameron Archer, Jadon Philogene, and Lewis Dobbin, suggest Emery is focusing on youth. Samuel Iling-Junior (20) and Enzo Barrenechea (23) from Juventus bring additional experience and will be looking to secure their roles.

Villa’s

Injuries from last season also play a part in the lineup discussions. Key players such as Tyrone Mings, Emi Buendia, and Boubacar Kamara will be pushing for spots in the starting eleven. Ross Barkley, signed after the season ended, has been promised a significant role by Emery, adding depth and versatility to the squad.

Expected to start for Villa are Emi Martinez in goal, with Ezri Konsa and Pau Torres forming the central defense. The club has invested heavily in left-backs, and Maatsen is likely to be the preferred choice. The team expects Matt Cash to start at right-back.

In midfield, the £60 million acquisition of Onana will be pivotal, alongside captain John McGinn and potentially Youri Tielemans. Emery might deploy Barkley just behind striker Ollie Watkins, with Leon Bailey given the freedom to operate from the flanks.

Emery’s squad rotation will be crucial, especially with the added demands of the Champions League. Villa’s strong squad depth should ensure that the team remains competitive across all competitions.
