Paul Scholes weighed in on the controversy surrounding Bayern Munich’s defeat to Real Madrid, agreeing that the German side had reason to be aggrieved by a contentious offside call.
During the match, Bayern conceded two late goals to Real Madrid, but they thought they had scored a crucial goal in stoppage time to force extra-time. However, Matthijs de Ligt’s goal was disallowed due to an offside flag from the linesman, despite replays indicating a marginal decision.
Speaking on TNT Sports, Scholes remarked, “I think the linesman puts his flag up too early to be honest. His flag goes up straight away. It is close, we know the defender heads it, even the one in behind De Ligt, I’m not sure he’s offside. The linesman is too hasty, he’s got to wait, they’re the rules! I do think the keeper stop, it is a great finish, would he have saved it anyway?”
The controversy arose as the linesman raised the flag quickly, preventing the VAR from intervening to review the decision. This led to protests from Bayern Munich’s players and coaching staff on the touchline.

Bayern had taken the lead through Alphonso Davies, putting them 1-0 up in Madrid and 3-2 ahead on aggregate. However, late goals from Joselu turned the tie in favor of Real Madrid. Who advanced to the Champions League final to face Borussia Dortmund.
Following the match, Bayern’s coach, Thomas Tuchel, criticized the decision, labeling it as “very, very bad” and “against the rules.” He expressed his disappointment, stating, “It feels like a betrayal in the end.” Tuchel also highlighted the referee’s apology but emphasized that it did not alleviate the team’s frustration.
Tuchel asserted, “Everyone has to go to their limit, everyone has to suffer, everyone has to play without making mistakes. So the referee has to be at that level too.” He concluded by emphasizing the importance of holding referees accountable for their decisions on the field.
