Mikel Arteta has acknowledged the inevitability of transfer mistakes when discussing Arsenal’s acquisition of Kai Havertz from Chelsea last summer.
The £65 million signing of the German international initially faced scrutiny for his underwhelming performances at the Emirates. However, Havertz has recently showcased improved form, notably scoring two goals against his former club, which has elevated his standing among Arsenal fans.
As Havertz prepares to face north London rivals Tottenham, Arteta opened up about the decision-making process behind signing him, recognizing that not every transfer will yield immediate success.
“It’s not solely my decision; it’s a collective decision,” Arteta stated regarding Havertz’s arrival at Arsenal. “We were aligned with the club’s vision, and on the sporting side, we made recommendations. Many stakeholders were involved, and securing ownership backing is crucial to make things happen.”
Acknowledging the possibility of errors in the transfer market, Arteta emphasized his efforts to minimize them and create an environment conducive to players fulfilling their potential.
While Havertz initially faced skepticism, his pivotal goals have contributed to Arsenal’s title pursuit. With the team currently leading the table by a narrow margin over Manchester City.
Ahead of the high-stakes north London derby, Arteta also commended his counterpart, Ange Postecoglou, for his impressive work at Tottenham. He praised Postecoglou’s clear direction and admired the style of play exhibited by his teams.
