Mark Lawrenson, a long-time fixture as a football pundit on the BBC, recently opened up about his departure from Match of the Day and Football Focus, expressing disappointment in how the BBC handled the situation.
During an interview on the Disruptors podcast with Rob Moore, Lawrenson confirmed that he was effectively let go from his roles due to his age. He recounted how the news came unexpectedly after the departure of another presenter. Dan Walker, made him realize he might be next.
Reflecting on the manner in which he was informed, Lawrenson described a lunch meeting with a BBC executive in Manchester. Where he was abruptly informed that he would no longer be part of Match of the Day. Instead, he would solely continue with Football Focus. The casual manner of the decision announcement, over lunch where Lawrenson’s meal was barely touched, left him feeling undervalued.
Lawrenson admitted that while he can now see the humor in the situation, he was initially taken aback and disappointed. He recalled being told vaguely that there would be changes without a clear explanation. Which he interpreted as a sign of age bias.
Further adding to his frustration, Lawrenson revealed that he was informed about changes to Football Focus shortly before the end of the 2021/22 season, which further cemented his departure from the BBC.
Despite his disappointment, Lawrenson acknowledged the BBC’s potential motives for seeking diversity in their lineup, which he respected. However, he emphasized that the execution of his departure could have been handled more respectfully and transparently.
Lawrenson concluded by expressing his fondness for his long tenure with the BBC, spanning over two decades, and lamented the abrupt manner in which it ended. He expressed a wish for better communication and clarity in such decisions, regardless of the reasons behind them.
The BBC has not responded to Lawrenson’s comments as of now.
