As UEFA EURO 2024 reaches its thrilling conclusion, anticipation is already building for the next final tournament in four years. Here’s a comprehensive guide to how UEFA EURO 2028 is shaping up.

Where will EURO 2028 take place?

UEFA EURO 2028 will be hosted in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. This joint bid from England, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Scotland, and Wales was accepted by the UEFA Executive Committee on 10 October 2023.

Ten stadiums will host the matches, including iconic venues like Wembley, Glasgow’s Hampden Park, Dublin Arena, and the National Stadium of Wales. Approximately three million tickets will be available for fans and the general public.

What are the dates for EURO 2028?

The exact dates for UEFA EURO 2028 have yet to be confirmed, but the tournament is projected to run from 9 June to 9 July 2028.

What is the format for EURO 2028?

The competition format will be confirmed around two years before the tournament. However, it is expected to follow the same structure as since UEFA EURO 2016. Twenty-four teams will compete in the group stage, with the top two teams from each of the six groups advancing to the round of 16, along with the four best third-placed teams. The tournament will then proceed in a knockout format.

When is qualifying for EURO 2028?

A new consolidated format will be used for qualifying. Specifically, teams will be drawn into 12 groups of four or five, subsequently playing each other home and away. Moreover, the qualifying group stage will start in March 2027 and eventually end in November 2027.

Group winners will qualify directly for EURO 2028. Runners-up will either qualify directly or participate in play-off matches along with teams from the UEFA Nations League. The play-off round is scheduled for March 2028.
