Mark Clattenburg Criticizes VAR Decision After Liverpool Denied Penalty Against Manchester City

Mark Clattenburg, former Premier League referee and current referees’ consultant at Nottingham Forest. Has expressed disagreement with the VAR decision that denied Liverpool a penalty during their 1-1 draw against Manchester City.

Liverpool’s appeals for a penalty were waved away by referee Michael Oliver after Alexis Mac Allister went down in the box in the 98th minute. Despite appearing to be caught by Jeremy Doku. VAR official Stuart Atwell did not overturn the decision, prompting frustration from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Clattenburg believes Liverpool were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty. And has criticized both VAR and the officials for failing to recognize the mistake.

In his Daily Mail column, Clattenburg stated, “Liverpool should have been awarded a stoppage-time penalty against Manchester City.” Highlighting the inconsistency in refereeing decisions and the reliance on VAR.

He emphasized that the incident would have resulted in a free-kick if it had occurred outside the box and argued that the location shouldn’t diminish its significance. Clattenburg also expressed frustration that despite Oliver’s decision, VAR did not intervene or suggest a review of the incident.

Clattenburg’s remarks underscore the ongoing debate surrounding VAR and its impact on match officiating in the Premier League.
