Manchester United’s turbulent season hit a new low on Boxing Day, as they suffered 2-0 defeat to Wolves at Molineux. The loss, compounded by Bruno Fernandes’ red card, marked the club’s fifth defeat in all competitions since manager Ruben Amorim warned of a “storm” that his team would need to weather.
Amorim, who took charge of United this season, has now lost five of his first ten matches—becoming the first United manager in 92 years to endure such a poor start. The latest defeat highlights the growing challenges facing the club. As Amorim’s predictions of a tough period have come to fruition far earlier than expected.
Earlier this month, after United’s dominant 4-0 victory over Everton, Amorim had foreseen difficulties ahead, stating, “The storm will come. I know my players and I know football. We are in a point where we are putting simple things in the team, without training. We will be found out in some games.” Since then, United have lost to Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, Tottenham, Bournemouth, and now Wolves.
Despite the heavy loss, Amorim appeared philosophical about United’s performance, focusing on the team’s control of the game rather than the result. He acknowledged that his side struggled to convert chances, particularly in the final third. But noted that they had “controlled” much of the match, even after going down to 10 men. Amorim also pointed to set-pieces, which proved to be pivotal in Wolves’ victory, as a factor in the outcome.
“The first half, I think we controlled it. Wolves made some transitions, but we were in control. Then, in the second half, we had to make some changes. The red card really made it hard for us,” said Amorim.
As United’s struggles continue, the pressure mounts on Amorim to reverse the team’s fortunes. With five defeats already behind them, the club faces a difficult challenge to regain momentum and restore confidence ahead of the new year.
