Manchester United faces a daunting task as they prepare to take on local rivals Manchester City, aiming to avoid a repeat of the humiliating defeat they suffered last season.
In October 2022, under the management of Erik ten Hag, United endured a chastening experience at the Etihad Stadium. Despite entering the match as underdogs, few anticipated the magnitude of their 6-3 defeat. Hat-tricks from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden propelled City to a commanding victory, with United conceding six goals, including two late consolation strikes from Anthony Martial.
Despite the dismal performance from the team, much of the post-match discussion revolved around Cristiano Ronaldo, who watched the entire game from the substitutes’ bench. Signed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the previous year, Ronaldo’s relationship with Ten Hag appeared strained, leading to widespread debate over his omission from the derby clash.

Ten Hag faced scrutiny over his decision to keep Ronaldo benched, citing respect for the veteran’s illustrious career as the rationale. He explained to reporters, “I didn’t bring him on out of respect for his big career… and the advantage I could bring Antony Martial on.”
However, United legend Roy Keane criticized the decision, accusing the club of disrespecting Ronaldo. Keane argued that Ronaldo should have been sold before Ten Hag’s arrival and expressed disbelief at keeping such a legendary player on the bench. He emphasized Ronaldo’s stature in the game and questioned United’s handling of the situation.
Following the derby disappointment and ongoing controversies, Ronaldo eventually parted ways with United, terminating his contract. He has since joined Saudi club Al-Nassr, while Ten Hag continues to face pressure at Old Trafford ahead of the upcoming derby clash.
